Poet Laureate of Johnstown
Poet Laureate of JohnstownThe Johnstown Poet Laureate Project is a contextual social-practice artwork that uses poetry as a means of examining place, identity, memory, and civic belonging. Rather than treating the poet laureate as simply an honorary literary position, the project approached the creation of the role itself as an artistic intervention into the cultural infrastructure of Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The work emerged from an understanding of Johnstown as a community with a complex industrial, cultural, and social history and asked how poetry might become part of the way a city understands and represents itself. By creating a civic role for poets, the project shifted poetry from the page and the gallery into the public sphere, establishing the poet as a participant in the ongoing cultural life of the community. The induction of Johnstown's first poet laureates transformed an artistic idea into a public ritual, creating a new form of civic recognition and giving poetry a visible place within the community's identity.

Stanza in Blue
Stanza in BlueStanza in Blue : Caol Áit The artist designed, sculpted, and painted ephemera, art, and other collectibles for each stanza of the poem “Design” by Billy Collins, Poet Laureate of the United States. Each stanza has a clue or a representation inside the room, which is painted—floor to ceiling—an ethereal blue, giving the sensation of floating or walking in the sky. The experience aims to allow viewers to experience a “thin place,” what Scottish/Irish folklore call in Gaelic “Caol Áit.” The folklore considers “thin places” as spaces where the veil between heaven and earth seems to grow translucent, even permeable. In Italian “stanza” means “room.” The artist lived in the room while he built the installation, allowing himself to live inside a poem. Visitors are challenged to find each stanza’s representation inside the room.. As a larger interactive experience, visitors can write a stanza of their choosing and drop it in the laundry chute outside the Blue Room hallway, where it will end up in a large-scale art experience for the public to see.
